1 big thing: should I stay or should I go now

Why it matters: As vaccination rates continue to climb and more regions are removing Covid restrictions, employers are making commitments around office, hybrid, and remote work constructs.

Big picture: Whether the great resignation materializes or not, retention must be a focal point for businesses this year. Per a recent Microsoft report, over 40% of the global workforce is considering leaving their employer this year. Retaining your talent means getting creative, from entrepreneurial leave to paid sabbaticals to flex work, employers are going to need to work to hold onto their people over the coming year.

Yes, but: "If you can go to a restaurant in New York City, you can come into the office. And we want you in the office," Morgan Stanley CEO James Gorman stated at a conference last week. He went on the share if NY employees weren’t back in offices by Labor Day they shouldn’t expect NY salaries.

The big picture: Flexibility will be your best hope of retaining talent. For most of you, that’s some level of a hybrid work construct. HR and people ops have been under tremendous pressure since last year as we helped our organizations navigate all things 2020 - don’t expect that to let up any time soon.
