NEW:  Amplify Community Wisdom

The Amplify Accelerator Community was specifically designed to help modern people operators expand their networks, thinking, and connections. Each week, I'll spotlight a helpful thread from the Community to help Amplify Digest subscribers learn from the discussions.

[Question] Hi folks - does anyone have resources or would be willing to connect with me on how to shut down a startup? I have been part of large re-orgs and RIFS in big corporations, but I will be facing my first "winding down" of a small startup (under 10 folks). Looking for any insight on comms plans, outplacement - honestly just a trusted person who's willing to spend 15 minutes talking through some logistics would be incredible. I am totally willing to repay in any resources or support I could help you with!

  • A1: Might make sense to see what the people at GetFive have to say for free.

  • A2: Thanks will check them out! Also came across this guide! https://coda.io/@homebrew/winding-down-your-company

  • A3: Closed two startups (one about 10 people; one 150 people). At least from my experience, not so different than re-orgs in corporate settings. Not too much smart to add to what coda.io is writing. As coda.io shared, the 1:1 with the employees are extremely important. When closing the start-up, we had 1:1 for the small startup on the same day and for the larger start-up on the next day. To be able to do this, we had always various HR people on the ground. For the larger scale up, we formed 5 teams for the talks. Each with HR and senior line management.

  • A4: Thanks - I find I'm leaning into a lot of the principles I used with larger RIFs even on the smaller scale. We are making sure we have multiple touch points with HR/Leadership set up post notification. Curious if you had an outplacement provider you would recommend? I spoke with GetFive on Friday and they seemed promising.

  • A5: We had no outplacement provider as we tried to move the good ones within the larger network. One thing I forgot to mention - for selected persons, we needed for shutting down operations, we had high retention bonuses. Helped us to smoothly shut down operations, as we had ongoing contracts with a third party, we needed to fulfill.
