[Question] I have a presentation coming up at a global offsite talking about our values. Wondering if anyone has done anything similar or seen/read any great ways to talk about values that have stuck out to them. I work in a creative agency so need ideas that will make it a bit more memorable and interesting than 'why values are important', 'what values are', 'how we will embed our values' etc...Also, if anyone has any tips about getting yourself back in the right headspace to present to a large audience after spending over two years on Teams let me know and not going to lie, pretty nervous...
A1: Practice what you are going to say A LOT! I was pretty nervous at my first in-person presentation last month but practiced it a lot with my wife and just in the mirror. Really helped ease the anxiety around it. As for values, I have always found telling a story around how they came to be, why they were chosen, and how you see them shaping the future of the company is much more impactful than the usual here are our values and this is why they are important. If you can craft a fun story that communicates it all without it being explicit, it becomes much more memorable to the whole team.
A2: Thanks! I have a feeling my wife is going to know a lot about this topic by the time I get to the presentation :-)
A3: What I've picked up from my coworkers who have been at creative agencies (even if I can't really do it well myself yet):
Have beautiful pages
More pages, fewer words on them
Use a few inspirational quotes from people with a strong personal brand (and spread the quote over a whole nicely designed page).
As for presenting after a long time - I've seen even famous performers time and time again say that they feel nervous before going on stage. So I remind myself it's normal to feel nervous and it's very rare that anyone can tell the speaker is nervous. So it's just a normal thing as once you're done speaking, it will be over.
A4: I facilitated about 8 values workshop last year. Someone had recommended an activity to put up a bunch of companies logos up on a page and ask the participants to guess what they thought their values were. It was a lot of fun and a great lead in to the concept of core values vs. aspirational values. Not sure if that would work for your talk - it was a big hit each time I facilitated. Happy to chat more about it. Good luck! I'm sure that you are going to crush it.
